Car Insurance: The Basics

Car insurance is mandated by the State of Texas.  You must show proof of Liability Insurance in Texas prior to registering your vehicles in the county where you live.

Fulshear Insurance Group can assist you in obtaining affordable car insurance coverage.  We work with many different insurance companies to make sure you have the right options and best price.

Bodily Injury - the most common limits include 30/60, 50/100, 100/300, 250/500.  A variation of other limits are also available.  Bodily Injury covers other drivers and passengers when you are at fault in an accident.

UM/UIM - Uninsured/Under Insured Motorist offers the same variations of limits listed under Bodily Injury.  This is a coverage to protect you and your passengers in the event the person who caused the accident does not have enough insurance to cover your damages.  This is especially important with hit and runs or drivers who only carry minimum liability limits.  UM/UIM may cover your medical expenses as well as lost wages.

PIP - Personal Injury Protection offers medical benefits to you or others in your vehicle who are injured due to an accident.  It can also provide a death benefit.  Common limits include $2,500, $5,000, $10,000.

Roadside Assistance is dependent on the company as to the level and limits of service offered.  Keep in mind, car insurance companies are in the business of providing coverage in the event of a loss.  They aren't really in the business of roadside assistance, but they do realize the necessity of offering this coverage.  Make sure you understand the level of service or limits provided by your insurance company.  Some limits include $50 maximum, 15 mile towing limit, or one service per 72 hours.

Rental Vehicle is not a benefit for renting a vehicle when you are out of town.  This is a benefit offered to you, typically with a maximum limit of 30 days, in the event your vehicle is involved in an accident and is not in driving condition or is being repaired.  Time is of the essence is facilitating your repairs or obtaining a new vehicle prior to the expiration of your 30 day maximum coverage limit.

Comprehensive Deductibles range from $100 to $2,500 depending on the insurance company.  This is the amount you pay before any benefits are paid by the insurance company.  Whether it's a flooded vehicle, stolen vehicle, or cracked windshield, the deductible you choose is the amount you pay first.  You may have a separate glass deductible in which case, the glass damage, cracked windshield, etc would be subject to the glass deductible instead of the comprehensive deductible.

Collision Deductible is the amount you pay to repair your vehicle in the event of an accident and you are at fault.  Whether it's mechanical damage or body damage, the deductible is the total amount you pay for the incident.  If your vehicle is totaled, the Collision Deductible is deducted from any proceeds from the insurance company.  If you are not at fault, in most cases the other driver will be responsible for all of your damages.  There are a few exceptions.

Other options for coverage include Accident Forgiveness, Diminishing Deductible, Dog & Cat Coverage, Original Parts Replacement, New Vehicle Replacement and many more.
